Chapter 12

Chip and Junior froze when the van squealed to a stop, leaving dust trail behind. Since the apocalypse, he had seen only Junior, and part of him was relieved to see others. His other side resented the fact that the solitude that he’d enjoyed with Junior would be interrupted. Junior closed the driver’s side door and inched toward the car’s rear. What happened to locking themselves inside? Chip thought.

The van was white with no windows on the sides. Chip was sure he recognized the driver, but he had to squint to see him. Though he should have been relieved, part of him felt threatened. Perhaps it was Junior’s warning about other survivors that threatened him, but he chose to maintain his faith in humanity.

Junior latched onto Chip’s hand and drew him in close. He’d never seen Junior look threatened, not even when a burly linebacker charged at him in the pocket, but Chip now saw fear in his eyes.

The van’s doors flew open and four figures poured out. Three of them he didn’t recognize, but the driver, a bearded man with white hair and shaded glasses, he knew as Mr. Malone from school. Always among the more open-minded teachers in school, Chip had always regarded him as one of his favorites. But now, the usual smile and cheer were absent, like he’d just come from a funeral.

“Don’t go anywhere,” Junior whispered, “just stay here with me.”

“You two need to come with us,” Mr. Malone said.

“Where will we be going?” Chip asked.

“Not important right now. What’s important is that we get you two boys with everyone else. We’re rounding people up.”

“Maybe we’re happy where we are,” Junior said. “What happens if we don’t want to come with you?”

“Don’t be ridiculous, Junior. We’ve got goals in mind and you’ll need others in order to survive. You do want to live a full life, don’t you?”

Junior didn’t answer. Life surely meant something different to him that it did to Mr. Malone. Chip was almost certain that his idea of the perfect life was one that they spent together, completely undisturbed.

“You two have been queering around,” Mr. Malone said it as a statement instead of a question. Chip wondered if he meant to imply that they had been sexual, but he wouldn’t dignify him with a response in any case.

“Is that what you two have been doing?” Mr. Malone asked. “And stop holding hands like that! It’s just disgusting!”

Junior squeezed Chip’s hand and he was sure he had no intention of letting go.

“I don’t give a shit what you guys think of us,” Junior said. “We’re going to live our lives the way we want to and we’re going to be happy.”

“There’s going to be a new order,” Mr. Malone said, “one with new rules. This new order is going to build a new world and we won’t let a couple of faggots like you screw it up for us.”
